What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
GEO is how brands get cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini: what it is, how it differs from SEO, and what a GEO audit measures.
Buyers stopped Googling first. They ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini: "What's the best CRM for a 50-person team?" The answer they get — which brands are named, quoted, or linked — is the new front page of search.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the work of making your brand visible inside those answers. Not ranking on page one. Being cited in the answer itself.
This guide covers what GEO is, why it matters now, how it differs from SEO, and what a GEO audit actually measures.
The shift in how buyers research
A search result page shows ten blue links. An AI answer shows one: a composed response with two or three cited sources. There is no position 4. You're either in the answer or you're not.
This changes the math of discovery:
- Search engines rank pages. AI engines cite brands. A product page that ranks #1 on Google can still be invisible to ChatGPT if the model's training data and retrieval prefer a competitor's press coverage or review profile.
- Answers carry authority the links don't. When Gemini says "brands like X and Y are strong options here," the buyer treats that as a recommendation, not a directory.
- The query is longer and more specific. "Best running shoes" is a Google query. "Best marathon shoes for wide feet under $180, compared to my current pair" is a ChatGPT query — and it resolves to a shortlist, not a results page.
If your buyers ask AI tools anything during research, you have a visibility problem you can't see with SEO dashboards. SEO tools measure where you rank on Google. Nobody measures where you appear inside the answer.
GEO vs. SEO: the real differences
SEO and GEO share a goal — be found — but they optimize for different machines.
The ranking unit is different. SEO ranks pages. GEO ranks entities: brands, products, and claims that a language model can cite. A well-structured page with clear factual claims about what your product does is more citable than a 3,000-word thought-leadership essay with no concrete statements.
Backlinks matter less; citations matter more. Google trusts links between pages. AI models trust being mentioned consistently across credible sources: reviews, press, documentation, forums, competitor comparisons. If twelve sources describe you the same way, the model treats that as fact.
Content structure is about extraction, not clicks. SEO content funnels toward a conversion. GEO-friendly content gives the model quotable, unambiguous facts: what you are, who you're for, how you're priced, what differentiates you. Comparison pages, FAQ sections, and clear "we do X, we don't do Y" statements are citable. Vague mission statements aren't.
Sentiment is a ranking factor. This is the biggest break from SEO. A language model doesn't just decide whether to mention you — it decides what to say about you. If the web's consensus is "great product, rough onboarding," the answer will say that. GEO includes managing what the models have learned about you, not just whether they mention you.
SEO isn't dead, and anyone selling "SEO is dead" is selling you something. But SEO measures a channel that no longer owns the whole funnel.
What a GEO audit measures
You can't optimize what you haven't measured. A GEO audit asks the models directly and records what they say. Here's what a serious one measures:
1. Citation presence. When someone asks a buying question in your category, do the models name your brand at all? How often, across how many query types (broad, comparison, "best of")?
2. Share of answer vs. competitors. Being mentioned alongside three competitors is different from being the only brand recommended. An audit compares your presence against the brands you actually compete with.
3. Sentiment of the mention. Is the model neutral, positive, or damning? A brand that's cited as "cheap but unreliable" has a different problem than a brand that isn't cited at all.
4. Evidence quality. Which sources is the model pulling when it talks about you — your own site, a review platform, a three-year-old blog post, a Reddit thread? The sources determine how fast you can move the needle.
5. Consistency across engines. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini don't agree with each other. One may love you and another may never have heard of you. An audit that checks one engine is a coin flip.
Notice what's missing: keyword rankings, domain authority, backlink counts. Those are SEO metrics. A GEO audit measures what the machines that answer your buyers actually say.
Why now
Three things converged:
- Usage. AI assistants became a default research step, not a novelty. Buyers who ask ChatGPT first will not also run the Google search that your SEO was built for.
- Answers are getting stickier. Models remember context and cite fewer sources per answer. Early movers who get cited consistently become the default recommendation — the "safe pick" the model reaches for.
- Nobody's measuring it. SEO has two decades of tooling. GEO visibility has dashboards built on guesswork or single-model checks. The brands that measure first get to act while competitors are still blind.
The honest caveats
GEO is young, and honesty matters more than hype here:
- Nobody knows the exact internals of how each model weights sources. Anyone claiming a precise ranking formula is guessing.
- Models update constantly. A snapshot today is a snapshot — visibility needs to be remeasured, not measured once.
- GEO doesn't replace brand, product, or distribution. If your product is weak, being cited more just means more people discover that faster.
What GEO does give you is the one thing you currently don't have: a factual record of what the machines your buyers consult actually say about you. That's the starting point. Everything else is optimization.
